The concept is believed to date back to 5th-century Ireland, when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait too long for their partners to propose. In response, St. Patrick allegedly designated February 29th as a day when women were allowed to propose to men. (However, it’s important to note that these origins are more rooted in legend than historical fact, and the tradition has evolved over time.)
